Meet the
2019 Democrats for Coventry Board of Education


Jennifer Beausoleil

     Jennifer Beausoleil
and her husband Vern have lived in Coventry for 23 years. They are the proud parents of Kyle and Jessica who are Coventry High School graduates. Jen currently serves on the BOE as Chairwoman.During her time on the Board she has also served as Vice-Chairwoman, Chair of the BOE Policy Sub-committee, and numerous other BOE sub-committees including: Fiscal, Policy, Executive, Roof, Expulsion, Gym Naming, Field Naming, Preschool Development, Technology, and Superintendent Search. Jen graduated from Union College with a degree in Computer Engineering and currently works as a Software Engineering Manager at Adaptive Optics Associates of Northrop Grumman Corp. She has over 35 years experience leading cross discipline technology teams to develop software systems and hi-tech solutions for product development and research based companies. She is an experienced member of 20+ labor contract negotiation teams. Jen has also served our community as a founding member of Coventry Citizens for Responsible Government, as a Coventry Youth Basketball coach, a Project Graduation volunteer, and a Dollars for Scholars volunteer. In 2015, Jen was 1 of 10 recipients of the 2015 Northrop Grumman Excellence in Volunteerism Award for her community service.

     “I am seeking re-election because Coventry's youth deserve representatives on the Board of Ed who understand how to work in partnership with education professionals, parents, and the community, to provide a school system that meets their education and developmental needs as they prepare to live and work in our ever changing 21st century world.”



Sean Gallagher

     Sean Gallagher
currently serves on the Board of Education. He and his wife Robyn moved to Coventry 5 years ago, drawn by the quality of the school system and the small town environment within which to raise their family. Sean has two children enrolled in Coventry schools, giving him a vested interest in maintaining the quality of Coventry schools over the next decade. Sean earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of Connecticut in 2006. After graduating, Sean worked in a variety of school environments, focused primarily on assisting students with behavioral or learning disabilities. For the past seven years Sean has been lucky to have the opportunity to stay at home with his children.

     “I am running for re-election because I believe in the Coventry Public Schools and want to support their continued success. My children and all of Coventry’s children deserve high quality education.”



Mary Kortmann

     Mary Kortmann
and her husband, Dr. Robert Kortmann, have lived in Coventry for 41 years. Both their sons are Coventry High graduates. Mary and Bob are proud grandparents of Silas. Mary currently serves on the Board of Education, and has served as Chair of the Board’s Fiscal Subcommittee. Mary is a graduate of Douglass College and of Rutgers University. For 26 years Mary and her husband have managed their small business based in Coventry, Ecosystem Consulting Service, Inc. Previously, Mary had a career in data processing at the Travelers Insurance Co., including 10 years as a manager. Mary’s dedication to our community includes volunteer service on the Coventry Economic Development Commission, active support for the PTOs at all 4 schools, and serving as both Treasurer and President of the Coventry High School Band Booster Club.

I want to continue to participate in guiding the Coventry schools toward becoming a high performing district. I am aware of where we have been, how far we have come and what areas still need focus in order to achieve our goals.”


Gene Marchand

Marchand has lived in Coventry for 22 years and currently serves on the Board of Education. He and his wife Patty raised two children who were educated in the Coventry school system and went on to earn college degrees. Gene graduated from Providence College with a degree in Sociology and from Syracuse University with a Masters Degree in Social Work. He has been a strong educational advocate during his 43 year professional career working with children and youth in the child welfare and juvenile justice fields as an administrator. After serving 15 years in municipal government, including as a police officer, and working with children and families, he was appointed to the position of Regional Director for the State Department of Children and Families. During a 29 year tenure with DCF Gene served in many capacities; including Director of Parole, Community Services Director, Contracts Manager, Director of Adolescent Services and Director of the DCF Wilderness School. Gene is a long time volunteer for our town, including as a 9 year member and vice-president of Coventry Youth Basketball. He coached boys recreational teams and the girls Travel Basketball Team during his tenure with Coventry Youth Basketball. He was also the co-founder and President of "Coventry Citizens For Responsible Government".

     “I want to continue to make the Coventry School system high achieving and cost effective institution. I am extremely proud of the tremendous gains and successes our schools have experienced in all areas. Coventry Public Schools have been widely recognized statewide and nationally for academic, athletic and other extra curricular achievements. I wish to continue to be part of the Board of Education “team” that supports these endeavors.”
